ITANAGAR, ARUNACHAL PRADESH, INDIA — Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker is on a landmark visit to India from April 14 to 17, marking the first visit by an Austrian Chancellor in over four decades and signaling a renewed push to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his discussions with Stocker as “very productive,” noting that India was chosen as the Chancellor’s first destination outside Europe after assuming office, reflecting a strong commitment to deepening India-Austria relations. The visit comes at a significant time, following recent advancements in India’s engagement with Europe, including progress on a major India-EU trade framework.

This high-level engagement also follows Modi’s own visit to Austria in 2024, underscoring the growing diplomatic momentum between the two countries. The current visit is being seen as a turning point in bilateral relations, opening a new chapter in a partnership that spans more than 75 years.

During their talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, both leaders focused on expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors. Key areas identified include semiconductors, quantum technologies, innovation, infrastructure, sustainability, and startups, reflecting a shared vision to build a future-oriented partnership.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted that India and Austria are committed to injecting new energy into trade and investment ties, with both sides recognizing immense potential in emerging and high-technology sectors. Defence cooperation and advanced manufacturing were also discussed as areas for closer collaboration.

Bilateral trade between the two countries has already crossed approximately $2.35 billion, and leaders expressed optimism about further growth. Efforts are expected to focus on enhancing business-to-business engagement, facilitating investment flows, and strengthening institutional partnerships, including through upcoming business summits and collaborative initiatives.

Chancellor Stocker, in his remarks, thanked Modi for the warm hospitality and described his visit as a great honour. He подчеркнул that being the first Austrian Chancellor to visit India in over four decades carries symbolic and strategic importance, especially at a time of increasing global uncertainty. He noted that partnerships based on shared values and mutual trust are becoming more crucial in today’s geopolitical environment.

The leaders also exchanged views on key international issues, including conflicts in regions such as Ukraine and West Asia. Both sides emphasized the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolution of disputes, reaffirming their commitment to a rules-based international order.

In addition to economic and strategic cooperation, the visit is expected to strengthen people-to-people ties. Initiatives related to student exchanges, cultural collaboration, and academic partnerships are being explored to further deepen the relationship at the societal level.

Defence and security cooperation also featured in the discussions, with both countries looking to enhance coordination in areas such as counter-terrorism and strategic stability. Such cooperation is increasingly important as nations navigate complex global challenges and evolving security dynamics.

The visit highlights Austria’s growing interest in engaging with India as a key partner in Asia, while also aligning with India’s broader efforts to strengthen ties with European nations. The evolving India-Austria partnership is expected to become more innovation-driven, technology-focused, and globally relevant in the coming years.

Chancellor Christian Stocker’s visit marks a historic milestone in India-Austria relations, setting the stage for deeper cooperation across economic, technological, and strategic domains, and reinforcing the importance of strong international partnerships in an increasingly interconnected world.
