Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh Tai Tagak inaugurated the first Delhi & NCR North East Sports Meet 2026 on July 31, officially declaring the championship open during a ceremony attended by athletes, students, and dignitaries.
The event aims to promote sportsmanship, youth empowerment, and unity among athletes from the Northeastern states residing in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
The sports meet has been organised by the 7 Sisters Foundation in association with the Delhi Olympic Association.
The initiative seeks to provide a common platform for talented sportspersons from the Northeast to:
- Showcase their sporting abilities
- Build stronger community ties
- Encourage healthy competition
- Promote youth participation in sports
The inaugural event was attended by several prominent personalities, including:
- Tai Tagak, Rajya Sabha MP and Chief Guest
- Saroj Sharma, President, Delhi Olympic Association
- Kuldeep Vats, CEO, Delhi Olympic Association
- Manash Deka, Chairman, Delhi & NCR North East Sports Meet
Athletes, students and representatives from various Northeastern states also participated in the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Tai Tagak emphasised that sports and culture play a vital role in bringing people together.
He said respecting the diversity, identity and traditions of different regions helps strengthen national unity while promoting mutual understanding and brotherhood.
According to the MP, initiatives like the sports meet encourage harmonious living and contribute to nation-building by fostering stronger bonds among communities.
During the programme, Tai Tagak interacted with athletes and students representing different Northeastern states.
He encouraged them to:
- Pursue sports with dedication
- Maintain discipline
- Uphold the spirit of fair play
- Continue striving for excellence
The MP praised the enthusiasm and determination displayed by the participants and expressed confidence that many of them would contribute to India’s sporting future.
Tai Tagak also congratulated the organising committee, volunteers, sponsors and participants for successfully hosting the inaugural championship.
He wished all athletes a memorable competition and hoped the event would continue to inspire young sportspersons in the years ahead.
